Founded in 1994 by Filmplaneet in Ghent, the Viewpoint Documentary Film Festival is the oldest festival within the Doc.World network. During its original nine-year run, the festival established an international reputation for its bold, independent programming, presenting works by acclaimed documentary filmmakers such as Frederick Wiseman, Alan Berliner, Kim Longinotto, and Michael Glawogger, while also collaborating with S.M.A.K. on exhibitions by artist and filmmaker Harmony Korine.
After concluding its first chapter in 2003, the festival was revived with the same commitment to discovering distinctive documentary voices and supporting emerging talent. Now in its 18th edition, Viewpoint continues to champion creative, independent documentary cinema from around the world, offering an intimate festival experience where filmmakers and audiences come together to celebrate the art of non-fiction storytelling.
As the founding member of the Doc.World network, Viewpoint embodies the values shared across all Doc.World festivals: artistic independence, international exchange, and a passion for documentaries that challenge, inspire, and broaden our understanding of the world.
